Some types of waste can only be taken to certain recycling centres:

  • Asbestos – must be correctly wrapped. You can bring up to 6 sheets or bags per visit, and up to 18 per year. Check the hazardous waste and asbestos disposal for guidance and a list of sites that accept it.

  • Cartons – not collected separately at Skelmersdale, Longridge and Altham.

  • Mattresses – only recycled at Burnley, Burscough, Chorley, Clitheroe, Farington, Preston and Skelmersdale. They can be disposed of at other recycling centres, except Garstang.

  • Carpets – only recycled at Burnley, Farington and Preston. They can be disposed of at other recycling centres, except Garstang.

We're not able to recycle hard plastics such as buckets, laundry baskets, children's toys and garden furniture at our recycling centres at present because there is low demand for the material from the recycling industry and manufacturers. If your items are in good condition, please consider donating them for reuse at a recycling centre or a charity shop. Any damaged or unwanted hard plastics brought to our recycling centres can be put in the general waste skip.

See the A to Z of recycling to find out what to do with items you may be unsure about.
