Trailers and towing development - DR026 (Non-CPC)

Course overview

This short course is designed for `New` or `Inexperienced` drivers and employees who drive any vehicles and tow trailers within their job role. The course also gives legal advice and professional guidance when towing or loading trailers.

Due to the nature of this course group sizes are restricted to a maximum of 6 people.

Course aim

This course has been created to provide additional guidance and development so that drivers for LCC are aware of the legal implications and potential hazards involved with trailer usage and the policies and procedures in place within LCC.

The course also aims to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations1999

Learning objectives

The learning objectives are to:

  • Provide practical experience and familiarisation of trailers and towing

  • Improve LCC driving standards

  • Improve performance and efficiency

  • Reduce LCC vehicle and trailer incidents, maintenance, and associated costs

Learning outcomes

The candidates will be able to understand the following:

  • Individual driving and towing entitlement

  • Awareness of possible hazards involved in trailer usage activities

  • Avoiding dangers in trailer operations

  • Roles and legal responsibilities of driver and how to comply with current legislation and L.C.C policies and procedures

  • Pre-use trailer checks and defect reporting procedures

  • Matching trailers to specific vehicles

  • Using a vehicle Reversing Assistant

Learning methods

A range of teaching and learning methods including presentation, demonstration, will be used with a focus on individual and group participation, including a practical element.

Course effectiveness

The underpinning knowledge and understanding principles are evaluated by question-and-answer sessions throughout the course.

The learning and development centre will be responsible for keeping records of attendance on this course and maintaining the standard of delivery and making improvements from trainee and trainer feedback.
