Refugee Week 2025 –'‘‘Community as a Superpower’'

16- 22 June 2025 - Join us!

Every year we celebrate the contribution of refugees and people seeking sanctuary in our communities during Refugee Week. In many schools across the country, teachers help children and young people to develop an understanding of refugee experiences that they will carry with them into their adulthood.

The theme for Refugee Week 2025 is “Community as a Superpower”. Everyone is invited to spend time with friends and build new connections in and beyond our neighbourhoods.

“We can begin the process of making community wherever we are. We can begin by sharing a smile, a warm greeting, a bit of conversation; by doing a kind deed or by acknowledging kindness offered to us.”- bell hooks

Communities can bring people together. Bridging divides and offering support. Spaces of resilience and places for healing. It’s amazing what we can do when we move together towards a shared goal.

During the week Lancashire pupils will be invited to join the Stronger Communities and Cohesion Team project "Community as a Superpower”.

Share with us what "Community as a Superpower”. means to you. Make an image using paint, crayons, photography or write a poem or a story on this theme.

Send all your entries electronically via a photo (initials of pupil and school included in the email please) to - izabela.zalewska-ratajczak@lancashire.gov.uk Please email us the best quality photograph you can take, in JPG format and preferably landscape.

Prizes will be given for the best 3 entrants.

Deadline for all entries is Tuesday 24th June 2025.

There are many ways schools can get involved in Refugee Week, from holding assemblies and dedicated lessons to taking part in creative activities. For more information on activities for Refugee week please follow the link: https://refugeeweek.org.uk/

Refugee Week 2024 –'‘‘Our Home’'

During Refugee Week 2024, students in Lancashire were invited to express their concepts of "Our Home" through various creative means Everyone was invited to celebrate what it means to them.

“To me, a home is where you feel loved, safe, and cherished.”- Malala Yousafzai

They could create images using paint, crayons, photography, or write poems and stories. We received an impressive total of 81 entries from 6 primary schools and 2 high schools.

Selecting a winner was a challenging task this year. However, we found that Kourtney from Holy Family Catholic School captured the essence of “our home” beautifully. Her words and visuals expressed in the poster best encapsulated an understanding of the concept, earning her 1st place in the primary school category.

Congratulations also to Jacob S. from Primet Primary School, who secured 2nd place with his poster.

And also congratulations to a Y5 pupil from The Cathedral Catholic Primary School alongside Y1 pupils from Primet Primary School for winning 3rd place in the primary school category.

Finally, special kudos to students from Lancaster Girls Grammar School: Hattie R., Year 7; Aishah A., Year 9; and Enola A., Year 11, for winning their respective Year group poetry competitions.

And let’s not forget Mohammad SN. from Blessed Trinity RC College, who won a prize in Y8 in the same category.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants in our Lancashire project and we look forward to hearing from you next year!
