If you're ready to take the first step to improving your health, we can help. A healthy diet and regular physical activity are essential for your health and can help prevent heart disease, some cancers and diabetes. It can also help you to stay active day to day, sleep better and improve your wellbeing.

Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce the risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

It will also:

  • lower your cholesterol

  • lower your blood pressure

  • reduce stress on your joints

  • improve your breathing

  • reduce fatigue

  • help you sleep better

Healthy adults programmes

We run free programmes in local venues across the county for people over 18 with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 (adjusted to 27.5 depending on ethnicity). Calculate your BMI.

Typically, each programme runs for up to 12 weeks with sessions lasting approximately 90 minutes. You will be offered weekly support to learn how to manage your weight.

For further information, we recommend contacting the service in your local area using the link below. You have the option to self-refer by getting in touch with the team near you, or your GP or health professional can make the referral on your behalf.

For families with at least one child between the ages of 5 and 10. Siblings may attend if one child is within the specified age ranges.

Programmes are delivered across Lancashire. Families will be referred into the programme by the school their children attend. You can find out more using the contact details below each course.

The programme lasts for 12 weeks and is for anyone over 18 who wants to:

Healthy families programmes

The family programme is for families with children living in Burnley and Padiham. It lasts for six weeks and takes place at primary schools and community venues.

Qualified tutors and chefs will lead the sessions. Each week, families will cook a different hot meal to take home. There will also be fun workshops about healthy eating and 30 minutes of games and physical activities.

The Play and Skills at tea-time activities (PASTA) programme is for families with children living in Chorley. It lasts for six weeks and takes place at primary schools and community venues.

Each session will include preparing and enjoying a nutritious meal as a family. The sessions are fun and active and include messages about the importance of being active.

The CHANGE programme lasts for 12 weeks and is for anyone over 18 who wants to:

  • Make changes to improve their health

  • Learn more about the food they eat

  • Have a healthy relationship with food

  • Manage their weight in a healthy and long-lasting way

The programme is delivered in small group sessions either face-to-face or online. One-to-one support sessions are also available.

In addition to nutrition sessions, we also offer low impact physical activity sessions including chair-based exercise classes, walks and racket sports throughout the week to encourage participants to increase their levels of physical activity.

The Shake, Taste and Make programme is for families with children living in Fylde. It lasts for six weeks and takes place at primary schools and community venues.

The hour-long sessions aim to educate the whole family on health and nutrition and teach cooking skills. The sessions include a physical activity, and cooking for the whole family. After the session, families are given the cooked meal, more ingredients and the recipe so they can make it again at home

  • Enhance their overall health and wellbeing

  • Have healthier eating habits without the need for restrictive dieting

  • Lose weight

We encourage increased physical activity and believe that making small lifestyle changes can have a lasting, positive impact on an individual's self-esteem, physical health, and mental wellbeing. Participants will be offered an initial assessment and support with setting their own personal health goals. There is a choice of support available to suit individual requirements with ongoing mentoring from our experienced Health and Wellbeing team.

Healthy families programmes

The Food Safari programme is for families with children living in Pendle. It lasts for six weeks and takes place at a local allotment.

A chef will develop a plan based on six different meals that they can cook in front of the children. The majority of the ingredients can be found on the allotment. The chef lets the families know what will be cooked at the start of the session, then the families walk/run around the allotment and try to find all the ingredients for the meal.

The 12-week programme is for anyone over 18 who wants to:

  • Improve their fitness

  • Lead a healthier and more active lifestyle

  • Lose weight

The sessions are delivered by qualified weight management and exercise specialists and are held at Deepdale, the home of Preston North End Football Club. The programme offers weekly motivational and educational workshops, with optional weekly weigh ins, advice and the tools to achieve weight loss goals. There is also a group exercise session in the stadium, as part of the programme.

  • Make changes that are right for them and their lifestyle

  • Attend healthy eating and weight education workshops

  • Attend optional physical activity sessions

  • Access physical activity classes and sessions that are run by the Healthy Lifestyle Team. Many of these classes are functional exercise classes that benefit people with joint problems or less mobility

The programme includes one educational session per week, from one of our seven venues, plus access to leisure facilities in a variety of venues across Rossendale. We also offer free daily health walks across Rossendale.

The Play and Skills at tea-time activities (PASTA) programme is for families with children living in Rossendale. It lasts for six weeks and takes place at primary schools and community venues.

The programme aims to give families the skills and awareness to achieve a healthier lifestyle. The sessions will recognise constraints such as budget, home cooking facilities, food culture and accessibility of food and drink within the local community,

As part of each session, children will have time to take part in fun activities and prepare a healthy nutritious meal to take home. Parents, carers or guardians must also attend all sessions.

We work with two delivery partners, Cookstars and The Greater Good, each deliver two 40-minute sessions focusing on food preparation, amateur dramatics and theatre activities.

The Active Lifestyles programme lasts for six weeks and is for anyone over 18 who wants to:

  • Make changes to their diet

  • Get more active

  • Receive knowledge, motivation and support to put them on the right track

  • Achieve a healthy weight

The sessions are educational and include physical activity. A three-month funded gym membership is included for everyone who completes the course.

There are monthly catch ups for a year after the course ends. Attendees can also join others on the programme in offering each other peer support and sharing their own experiences to lose weight and feel great.

The Walk this Weigh programme lasts for eight weeks and is for anyone over 18 who wants to:

  • Make better food choices

  • Improve their health

  • Become more active

  • Maintain a healthy weight

The programme content will include: fats, sugars, food labelling, why diets don't work, portion control, blood pressure checks, and the benefits of physical exercise. There are discreet weekly weigh ins before each session.

At the end of the programme, there is continued support available via monthly drop ins. All sessions are informal and take place in the local community, in accessible venues across West Lancashire.

It explores exciting recipes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, gives practical tips on portion sizes and healthy swaps, and even explains how to use tools like air fryers and soup makers to make mealtimes easier. Everyone in the family gets involved, from cooking, family games and exercise, to washing up.

Our sessions are designed to be welcoming and inclusive, offering a relaxed space where families can connect, try new things, and share experiences. Families will learn ideas for easy, nutritious meals and how small changes can make a big difference to health and wellbeing. PASTA is the perfect opportunity to spend time with your children, make new friends, or pick up new skills.

Wyre's residents have access to two different programmes:

  • In partnership with Slimming World, there are over 30 groups in different community venues across Wyre. Their consultants offer support, friendship, and inspiration through a local group. The 12-week programme focuses on nutrition, physical activity and behaviour change to provide healthy weight management plans

  • Fleetwood Town Community Trust provide an eight-week men's weight management programme at their Highbury football ground

There is also a funded three-month membership at Fylde Coast YMCA on successful completion of either adult course.

The programme involves some physical activity, and cooking for all the family. Families will get the opportunity to cook a healthy, nutritious meal in the school kitchen with a trained chef, they can then take the meal home for dinner. They will also learn about behaviour change and how to lead a healthier lifestyle.
