29 October 2026: Government confirms a continuation of the Local Government Reorganisation review in Lancashire
The government has today confirmed that its review of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Lancashire will continue into early 2027.
You will be aware that, in September, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government announced a review of recent LGR decisions, including the decision relating to Lancashire.
The government has now confirmed that its review of Local Government Reorganisation in Lancashire will continue until the new year, after which time councils will be informed of the next steps for the programme.
This will give ministers additional time to consider the options for Lancashire and make sure any future decisions are informed by a thorough review and assessment. The government’s original decision on LGR in Lancashire, which was paused in September, has now been withdrawn and the outcome of the review will now be confirmed in the new year.
I know that some staff may be feeling uncertain or concerned about what this continuation could mean for them. I want to reassure you that there is no change to your role, the council you work for, or the services we provide to residents and communities. Our priority remains supporting the people and communities of Lancashire, and that important work continues as normal.
Thank you for your continued professionalism, resilience and commitment during this period of uncertainty.
I will continue to keep you updated on the progress of the government's LGR review as and when new information becomes available.
In the meantime, you can find lots of information on the Local Government Reorganisation website.
I recognise that this may feel uncertain. I will be holding an online session on the morning of Thursday 26 November for all staff. I'll provide an update and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
A link to the virtual session will be published on staff news soon.
Kind regards
Mark Wynn
